PNA Sponsors a First Friday Art Opening

PNA's Salvador Dali lithographs will be on display and available for purchase during the February 5th First Friday Art Walk from 5:30-8:00pm at the offices of PNA parents Richard & Krisit Fuller at 1007 West Third Avenue.  PNA founder Dr. David Beal generously donated to PNA Dali's fifteen lothograph series, Don Quixote of La Mancha.  This numbered, authenticated series includes such works as "The Impossible Dream" and "The Heart of Madness".  Salvador Dali, the Spanish surrealist painter who lived from 1904 to 1989, is best known for this incorporating striking bizarre images.

In addition, Dr. Beal has donated the painting "Connected Through Music" and the limited edition serigraph "Preservation of Love" by Yuri "Yuroz" Gevorgian.  Yuroz has recently become prominent for his work "The Light of Compassion", which was commissioned by the pope in honor of Saint Arcangel Tadini.  These two Yuroz works will be available at PNA's gala auction on February 20, 2010.

PNA Enrollment Increases 37%

With the addition of fourteen new students for second semester, Pacific Northern Academy’s enrollment has increased 37% from the previous school year.  In discussing the increase, Head of School Mark Niedermier said that he believed that word about the strength of the school’s Early Kindergarten through Eighth Grade program was spreading throughout the Anchorage community, that “PNA is becoming known as a great alternative for both meeting the needs of gifted children and helping all children do the best they can.” He also mentioned that “this growth is particularly impressive when there are so many concerns about the strength of the economy.” The 2008-2009 school year is the third consecutive year of increasing enrollment for PNA as an EK-8 school, which now enrolls 133 students.

Service Day in the News

PNA's All-School Day of Service was held on December 17. Staff members and volunteers worked together with mixed-age groups of children to make scarves and hats for the homeless, fleece blankets for Salvation Army Cares for Kids, thank you cards for soldiers and more. The Anchorage Daily News created a slide show with audio to capture the spirit of the day:  http://www.adn.com/slideshows/.

Pacific Northern Academy is seeking land lease proposals for portions of its 9+ acre campus at 550 Bragaw Street in Anchorage, Alaska. Paved and unpaved portions are available, and electrical service is available. There is excellent access from the Glenn Highway. PNA Military Scholarship Program Begins

Mark Niedermier, Head of School at Pacific Northern Academy, announced
today the launch of a new scholarship program that will reach out to
Alaska's military community. The Military Scholarship Program for middle
school age children of active duty personnel provides scholarships worth
$6,250 each, covering over half of the school's annual tuition. In
discussing the new program, Head of School Mark Niedermier stated that
in a review of needs within the community, the Board of Trustees decided
to offer exceptional students in military families improved access to a
PNA education. Additional funding through the school's need-based
financial aid program may also be available.

The Military Scholarship Program is effective with the second semester
of the current school year for children in grades five through eight.
Beginning next fall, the program is available for students in grades six
through eight. To be eligible, students must perform at or above the

90th percentile in anationally-normed standardized achievement test.

Submission of a student essay is also required.

PNA is now in its twelfth year as Anchorage's premier independent
school.  PNA's unique and successful program is characterized by an
intellectually challenging environment with an emphasis on visual arts,
performing arts, community service, and cultural diversity. Recent
surveys among parents at PNA revealed exceptionally high satisfaction
rates for the quality of the curriculum, the engaged and talented
faculty, the opportunities for parent involvement and the outstanding
arts program. Director of Admissions Susan Bergt comments that the
parent survey really showed that "Our kids like our school and love
learning here."  PNA's test scores indicate that the school is hitting
the mark with the average PNA middle school student scoring in the top
ten percent nationally.

Niedermier commented that PNA looks forward to meeting with military
families in the near future to explain the program and how to access it.
More information about PNA, the various programs offered are on the
school's website: www.pacificnorthern.org
