2020 Summer Stem Camps

June 1-5 Green Thumb Gardeners
Grades K-6

Grow something beautiful or delicious in this fun and hands-on camp! Dig in the dirt, sift soil between your fingers, make a mud pie.  Get your hands dirty as you plant an organic container garden to take home— full of beautiful flowers or delicious vegetables and herbs. We will plant nasturtiums, lettuce, peas, beans, zucchini and more!  Learn about the animals and insects that help your plants survive and help create a flower and vegetable garden that will grow in the sun outside PNA all summer long.  

 

June 8-12 Robotics I

Grades K-6

Build robotic machines or robots that spin, push, or respond to touch or sound. Program them with visual drag-and-drop programming software. Design robots to complete simple and challenging tasks like an animals that move or a vehicle with sounds and lights.  Use sensors to guide a robot through a maze.  Projects will be adapted towards camper skill level and will use Beebots, LEGO Education WeDo or LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 kits.

June 15-19 Stones, Bones & Old Cell Phones

Grades K-6

Get dirty! Dig up Alaska's past and learn how archaeologists and paleontologists solve the mysteries of how Alaska's prehistoric people and animals made Alaska their home and how we are still using some of the same adaptations today. Discover bones, tools, and other relics during a mock dig!

June 22-26  Future Engineers

Grades K-6

Tackle daily engineering challenges and learn how engineers create and build structures, products, and systems.  Solve problems with your own inventions! Using the engineering design process, design, create, test, and refine the fastest racer.  Learn about friction, force, motion and propulsion techniques to make your car move. Projects will be adapted towards camper skill level.

June 29-July 2 (4 Days) Robotics iI

Grades K-6

Note: projects will be modified for students who attend both weeks of robotics camp.

July 6-10 future surgeons

Grades K-6

Calling all future Doctors, Surgeons, and Veterinarians! Practice your lab skills like a real scientist or surgeon.  Learn about the inner workings of animals and humans through virtual and hands-on dissections and building models. Campers will dissect a squid, fish, or frog. Scrub in like a surgeon for our mock surgery and compare a fetal pig to human anatomy. ($20 lab fee)

July 13-17  3D Fun

Grades K-6

Eye see you! Discover how eyes work and how to play tricks on them.   Experience virtual reality, experiment with optical illusions, make 3D glasses, learn techniques to draw and design in 3D. Blend real and imaginary images to create an augmented reality with mythical creatures, spacecraft or amazing worlds of your own design.  ($15 technology fee)

July 20-24  Swirling Sculptures

Grades K-6

Art and engineering combine to create crazy contraptions and magnificent mobiles. Using balance, energy and design, build large scale moving sculptures that twirl in the breeze or ball machines that seem to defy gravity.  Find inspiration in the works of artists Alexander Calder or Anne Lilly and visit the Anchorage Museum to see the ball machine sculpture, Calliope Borealic designed George Rhoads. ($35 field trip fee)

 

This camp is adapted from curriculum developed by the Edgerton Center at MIT.

July 27-31  Olympic Dreams

Grades K-6

Go for the gold during this week of camp! Learn about the first competition in Ancient Greece and how it has transformed into the modern Olympic games.   From badminton and basketball to track and field or table tennis, experience favorite and lesser known sports. Learn about different countries of the world while we create our own version of the Olympic games, complete with its own unique events. Olympic four square, anyone?

It’s full STEAM ahead at Create Academy— the place where science, art, and technology collide with a whole lot of creativity. Immerse yourself in the creative process and learn new skills to take your creations to a whole new level. Start the day by asking, “What problem will I solve, what challenge will I overcome, what question will I ask today?” Collaborate in groups to develop an innovative solution to tackle a real world challenge. Let your inner inventor shine during open create time in the Makerspace.

 

Each day campers will: 

  • Learn a new skill in the Skill Lab

  • Tinker/Investigate 

  • Design, create, invent in the Makerspace

  • Collaborate with new friends

  • Experiment with art

  • Explore nature 

  • Play games

  • Have fun!

  • Weekly grouping differentiated by age/skill level

  • 18 students maximum per group

  • Taught by Professional Educators

  • Hours: 8:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.

  • Extended care between the hours of 7:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m.

  • Early Bird Registration Fee: $295 per week; Extended Day included

  • Price increases to $310 on May 1, 2020

Summer Tech Camps

Create Academy is excited to offer fun and exciting technology programs from CodeREV, a nationally recognized summer camp and afterschool program based out of California.  Tech class are limited to 15 students and feature an in-depth study of the topic.  They do not include outdoor ed or creative arts classes however they do include snack/lunch breaks and recess/choice time.

June 15-19  Minecraft Level Design & Engineering 
Grades 2-5 
$500

CodeREV's most popular class for this age group. Students learn the ins and outs of level design and game design while learning to engineer in Minecraft using RedStone. Students even learn basic code commands too! This class offers thrills AND education alike as students explore their inner Da Vinci in a STEM format perfect for Minecraft lovers! Curriculum developed by CodeREV.

 

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate- activities adapted toward the skill level of the participant. Typing experience helpful.

July 6-10 Modding in Minecraft Game Design 
Grades 5-8 
$500
Students will create powerful teleporting swords, humorous blocks, amazing mobs, bows that shoot arrows that summon ender dragons, entire worlds, and other insane items, all through the power of Java programming! Perfect for both the beginning coder and the advanced Java modding aficionado.  Curriculum developed by CodeREV. 

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate- activities adapted toward the skill level of the participant. Typing experience helpful.

  • Health insurance information

  • Date of last tetanus shot

  • Basic medical information

  • Doctor's name and phone number

  • Payment information

NOTE: Once you begin the registration process, you will be allowed to save the information and go back to it at a later date, however registration is not complete until payment has been received.
